Why grid-tied solar goes dark (anti-islanding)
When utility lines are down, line workers may be repairing them. A rooftop system that kept pushing power onto those lines could energize wires that are supposed to be dead. Utility interconnection rules and inverter standards require anti-islanding: if the grid disappears, the grid-tied inverter must stop exporting.
That rule applies whether your meter is Tampa Electric (TECO), Florida Power and Light (FPL), Duke Energy Florida, Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC), Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative (WREC), Lakeland Electric, or another provider. Sunlight does not override anti-islanding.
What does work in a Florida outage

TECO and other utilities: interconnection is part of does it work
Owning a battery is not enough. On TECO, customer-owned battery subsystems 1 kW or more generally require TECO battery interconnection, documentation, and a successful utility inspection in addition to city or county permits.
Backup only works after the utility authorizes interconnection. Do not turn a system on before permission to operate or signed authorization. What Florida outages actually feel like

2026 incentives note: honesty over hype
For new residential purchases in 2026, do not count on the old 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (§25D). IRS guidance on P.L. 119-21 states §25D does not apply to expenditures made after December 31, 2025. Ask your tax advisor about any carryforward. Florida sales-tax and property-tax treatment may still help; we confirm for your address and do not invent rebate dollars.
