Full-Home vs Critical-Load Battery Backup in Florida: Which Do You Actually Want?
When Florida homeowners shop batteries, they usually get shown one of two pictures:
- Critical-load (essential circuits) — a subpanel with lights, fridge, maybe a few outlets. Everything else goes dark.
- Full-home backup — the house keeps living: lights, kitchen, outlets, and — for most families — air conditioning in the rooms you actually use.
PowerSol USA defaults to full-home. We are battery-first (the battery’s hybrid inverter runs the show; solar is the charger), BBB A+, and customer-first. Most of our customers do not want to “survive” an outage in one room with a flashlight. They want the home to feel normal.

What “critical load” really means
Critical-load backup is not a moral judgment — it is an electrical and budget choice. The installer moves must-have circuits to a subpanel fed by the battery. When the grid drops, only that subpanel stays alive.
Honest upside: lower equipment cost sometimes; simpler path on a crowded main panel. Honest downside: the rest of the house is off. No laundry. No full kitchen. Often no A/C. Guests in the dark. In a multi-day Florida outage, it feels like camping in your own house.

Why full-home is the PowerSol default
- Florida heat is not optional comfort. Without A/C, backup fails the family test fast.
- Modern batteries + hybrid inverters are built to run homes. Many Gen 2 / Gen 3 class systems offer on the order of ~200A pass-through, letting a properly designed system start A/C without drama.
- We size for ~14 hours of night, then let daytime solar run the house and recharge the battery — runtime is days-of-sun, not one drain-to-empty evening.
- Most PowerSol customers want full-home, not a four-circuit consolation prize.
Critical-load-only remains available when the panel, service size, or budget forces a phased plan. We will say so — we will not upsell silence or downsell fear.
Battery first still applies either way
- The battery + hybrid inverter is the core
- Solar panels charge that system and carry daytime loads
- You stay on TECO, Duke, FPL, OUC, or your co-op — with an off-grid feel when the utility fails
Solar-only is rarely our recommendation. A critical-load battery without a recharge plan is also a half-answer for hurricane season.

A simple decision guide
Choose critical-load-only if:
- You need a smaller first step and accept dark zones
- The main panel / service cannot support full-home without an upgrade you are not ready for
- Backup is “fridge + lights” only by explicit choice
Choose full-home if:
- You want A/C and a normal house during outages
- You are done stressing about utility blips and multi-day storm outages
- You want solar as the daytime charger that keeps the battery ready
2026 cost & tax note
Equipment scope drives price. For rough orientation we use approximate ranges (VERIFY before publish): about $30K for ~10 kW solar + ~30 kWh battery vs about $25K for ~10 kW solar-only.
Federal 30% residential credit (§25D): not for most new purchases with expenditures after December 31, 2025. Confirm carryforwards with your tax advisor.
FAQ
Will full-home backup run my pool pump?
It can when capacity allows. We do not treat the pool pump as a must-have for sizing. Comfort and food storage come first.
Can I start critical-load and upgrade later?
Sometimes. Ask us to leave a clean path for expansion so you are not redoing the job twice.
Does full-home mean I can ignore energy use in an outage?
No. Smart setpoints, especially A/C, still matter. Wasteful use shortens any system.
Is PowerSol only selling the expensive option?
No. We recommend the option that matches your real goal. Our default is full-home because that is what most Florida families actually want.
