When a retrofit makes sense
A battery add-on is usually worth a look when your solar offsets daytime use but you go dark in outages—and you want lights, a refrigerator, outlets, plus A/C in the rooms you live in.
It may not be the first project when the array or roof needs major work, or the main panel cannot support a safe backup path without a larger electrical project than you want. Customer-first means we say “not yet” when the install would not be clean.
Hybrid vs. AC-coupled: a high-level view
Older grid-tied solar often used a string or microinverter path that sends power to the grid and shuts down in an outage for safety. Adding backup is not “plug a battery into the garage and hope.”
At a high level, installers typically choose among architectures such as:

Main panel, service, and A/C
Retrofit success is often decided at the main panel and service, not on a brochure. We look at panel capacity and space for backup or transfer equipment, whether a service upgrade is required for a safe full-home path, and how your A/C will start under backup.
Must-haves: lights, refrigerator, and everyday outlets. A nice-to-have most homeowners insist on: A/C for most zones. Usually not critical: a pool pump.

Full-home default and multi-day runtime

Utility interconnection notes
You stay grid-connected. A retrofit still needs the right utility interconnection and permission-to-operate path—TECO, Duke, FPL, OUC, WREC, Lakeland Electric, or another provider. Utility rules differ, so confirm your provider on your bill; older solar approvals may need an amendment when storage is added. We handle the paperwork.
