Hurricane Battery Preparedness for Florida Homes: Stay Cool When the Grid Doesn’t

Hurricane prep in Florida used to mean water, shutters, and a generator at 2 a.m. Today the smarter stack is quieter: a home battery with a hybrid inverter, solar as the charger, and a design aimed at full-home backup — including the A/C most families refuse to live without.

PowerSol USA is a Tampa-based, BBB A+ rated, customer-first installer. We are battery-first and rarely install solar-only. We serve much of Florida — Tampa Bay through Orlando, the Space Coast, Port St. Lucie, Naples, and north toward Ocala/Gainesville — not Miami-Dade, Broward, or the Panhandle.

Quick answer

  • Plan for about ~14 hours of nighttime autonomy for planned loads.
  • Multi-day outages work as night on battery → day on solar with recharge → repeat while the sun cooperates.
  • Full-home is our default; most customers want the whole house.

What prepared actually means before storm season

  1. Loads you will not negotiate — lights, refrigerator, outlets, phones, medical devices, and internet.
  2. Comfort loads — A/C for living areas or most zones.
  3. Loads that can wait — pool pump is usually not why we size the system.
  • Recharge plan — solar on the roof so the battery is not a one-night toy.
  • Utility reality — stay connected to TECO, Duke, FPL, OUC, or your co-op; the system is for when they cannot feed you.
  • See our full-home battery backup guide for deeper product logic.

The outage math Florida homeowners misunderstand

At night you mainly draw the battery. By day solar runs the home and recharges storage. Runtime becomes as many productive sun days as your system allows, not a single drain-to-empty evening. A fat battery with no recharge plan is only half prepared.

A/C is a design problem, not a surprise

Many Gen 2/3 class battery systems offer on the order of ~200A pass-through, which can let a properly designed system start air conditioning without drama. We plan the compressor as a load.

Real story: Apollo Beach / Tampa area — eight days

With permission to share the experience, a homeowner’s uncle in Apollo Beach had roughly 17 kW of solar and two FranklinWH batteries installed before the last hurricane. The surrounding community lost utility power for about eight days; their home held A/C around 70°F, and they said they did not notice when the grid went out or came back on.

    Pre-season battery checklist

    Electrical / system

    • Battery and hybrid inverter commissioned; app and monitoring working
    • Solar production normal on a clear day
    • Backup mode tested — know what stays on
    • Main panel and pass-through path reviewed for A/C start
    • Firmware current per manufacturer guidance

    Home habits

    • Thermostat plan for outages
    • Fridge and freezer sorted; avoid unnecessary door opening
    • Charge phones and power banks while the sun is up
    • Pool pump deferred unless capacity allows
    • Know your utility outage map but do not depend on it for comfort

What we recommend for storm season

    • Anker (tri-fuel generator option or EP Cube 2) for strong residential value
    • FranklinWH and Fortress as full-home peers
    • Tesla when FEOC-compliant and project needs fit
    • Rooftop solar as the daytime charger
    • Full-home backup as the design aim

Generators can still have a role, including certain Anker tri-fuel options. They supplement the plan when solar can refill the battery after the sky clears.

    Money talk without fairy tales

Approximate orientation only, confirm on a real quote: about $30K for ~10 kW solar + ~30 kWh battery versus about $25K for ~10 kW solar-only. For most new owner expenditures after December 31, 2025, the old 30% residential §25D credit does not apply. We will not sell storm fear with an expired tax promise.

    The real product

You can stay hooked up to Duke, TECO, FPL, OUC, and the rest. A battery-first Florida home is grid-connected with an off-grid feel; after enough sun hours it can feel like you are living mostly on your power.

    FAQ

Should I buy a battery before storm season?

After is how people end up on a waitlist with a warm fridge. If the design is ready, install before peak season.

Will solar work in a hurricane?

You need healthy array production for the clear days after the storm, when recharge matters most. Follow manufacturer and AHJ guidance.

Do I need a generator too?

Sometimes as layered resilience, including certain Anker tri-fuel options. Many families find a properly sized battery and solar stack covers what they used a generator for.

    Is full-home backup realistic?

It is our design aim when loads and capacity match. Critical-load-only is the compromise.

Can you use the Apollo Beach example for my house?

Every home differs. Your proposal will use your loads.

Get storm-ready before the cone appears

Ask for a battery-first hurricane design: nighttime capacity, full-home intent, solar as charger, and equipment that fits your budget and compliance needs.
